Filling the calendar
The salon is empty on a Tuesday: what to do, in order
An empty salon on a Tuesday almost always comes from one of three leaks: retention, conversion or acquisition. We deal with them in that order, because fixing retention costs the least and pays off the fastest. Spending on advertising before looking at the other two is like pouring water into a leaky bucket.
Before asking yourself how to attract clients, ask a less pleasant but more useful question: are you losing them?
Start by identifying which of the three leaks applies to you
An empty calendar almost always comes from one of these three places. Dealing with them in the wrong order is costly, because the third is the most visible and the least profitable.
- An acquisition leak. Clients are looking for you, or for a salon like yours, and don’t find you. It’s the most common case, and the least felt: you don’t see the ones who never came.
- A conversion leak. People find you, but don’t book. No hours displayed, no button to book, a phone that rings while you’re in the middle of a balayage.
- A retention leak. Clients came, were happy, and didn’t come back. Nobody reached out to them.
Look at your client database before drawing conclusions. How many clients haven’t been back in three months? If the number surprises you, your problem isn’t acquisition.
1. Retention, because that’s where the money already is
A client who knows you costs infinitely less to bring back than a stranger to convince. She knows where you are, she liked the result, she simply hasn’t booked again: life got in the way.
What works is the simplest thing: a message, at the right moment, written the way you talk. Not an aggressive promotion, not a “we haven’t seen you in a while.” Something like: “Hi Grace, your last color was in late May. Want me to hold a slot for you on Thursday or Saturday?” That’s the kind of message Blissa prepares from your client database, with 300 SMS included from the Pro plan.
2. Conversion, because it can be fixed in an afternoon
A client who found your salon and leaves is work already paid for that gets thrown away. The causes are almost always practical.
- She doesn’t know if the salon is open. Accurate hours, including one-off closures, are worth more than all the marketing in the world.
- She can’t book right away. Many search in the evening, after closing time. If she has to call tomorrow, she’ll book elsewhere tonight. Online booking isn’t a convenience, it’s the moment the decision is made.
- She doesn’t know how much it costs. Missing prices don’t intrigue, they worry. A clear price range gets more bookings than a hidden rate.
- She forgets to come. Missed appointments are a silent leak. An automatic SMS reminder the day before recovers up to 85% of them.
3. Acquisition, once the rest holds
Only then is it worth going after new clients, because the ones you bring in won’t slip out through the first two holes.
And the first lever isn’t a paid one: it’s being findable where people look for you. A complete Business Profile, a website in your name, recent reviews. We detail the mechanics in the article on Google visibility.
Advertising comes after, if you want it. Never before: paying to send people to a door that doesn’t open is the best way to conclude that “ads don’t work.”
The special case of the midweek lull
Empty Tuesdays and Wednesdays aren’t a volume problem, they’re a distribution problem. Saturday is probably fully booked. Two moves, to test in this order:
- Offer the quiet slot first. When a client books, if your calendar offers Tuesday before Saturday, some of them accept without a second thought.
- Target the lull, not everyone. A win-back aimed at clients who usually come during the week fills more than a message sent to the whole database.
What not to do
- Slash prices. Discounts attract bargain hunters. They come back for the next promotion, somewhere else.
- Post more. Posting twice as often on Instagram when the calendar is empty adds unpaid work to an already difficult week.
- Change everything at once. If you change your visibility, prices and hours in the same week, you’ll never know what worked.
